JJ Grey, Marc Broussard, Luther Dickinson and Anders Osborne have revived their Southern Soul Assembly project for a lengthy tour in March. The supergroup brought their soul show to the Lyric Theatre on Thursday night and were greeted by a raucous crowd.
Launched in 2014, Southern Soul Assembly is an “artist-in-the-round performance series”, that finds Grey, Broussard, Dickinson and Osborne trading licks, telling stories and complimenting each other's talents. The show featured each artist playing originals from their personal catalogs, including some songs which have never been released. Between songs, the guys traded stories, jokes and insight that brought each song to life. It was hard to tell if there was a setlist or how much the show was improvised. One thing was clear, the audience loved every minute. What a treat to see four amazing artist on the same stage. The intimate setting of the Lyric Theatre was the perfect venue for the show. Creating an atmosphere that felt like old friends coming together after some time apart.
The guys continue their tour tomorrow night in Germantown, TN. The tour will take the guys through much of the South, East Coast and Midwest. Playing at least twenty-one cities in March alone. A truly unique experience, not to be missed..
