30 Seconds to Mars at Oak Mt Amphitheather

July 3rd, 2018 was a momentous night for those that found themselves at Oak Mountain Amphitheater in Pelham, AL.  It was hot.  It was muggy.  It was glorious and it was fitting because we were all on Mars that night.  A small outfit from Los Angeles California called Thirty Seconds to Mars happened to be there that evening and they transported everyone there to another world if not for just a few hours.  I will be the first to admit I am a massive fan, their debut self titled album was such a powerful compilation of songs, crafted with a sonic wave of emotion and power that few debut albums have managed to achieve.  Their follow up "A Beautiful Lie" was a tiny departure from their raucous synth and guitar driven debut.  It was well written and still provided some great anthemic songs like "The Kill" but didn't quite deliver the experience I had with the first.  2009's "This is War" saw the band encounter a hectic and stressful battle with their label during the recording process which impacted the album in quite a positive way in my opinion.  Songs like "Night of the Hunter" and the title track "This is War" brought raw power and vigor to the album with messages of defiance and rebellion to the norm while the uplifting anthem "Kings and Queens" shared a message of hope and togetherness in a world that is too often devoid of either.  2013's "Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams" saw even more of a departure from the rock driven focus of the debut album and into more of a pop driven, radio friendly arena.  There were still a few powerful songs on the album that brought the same well written and raw emotional aspect earlier songs possessed but it seemed the band had shifted from it's earlier beginning influences into a new realm with which I wasn't quite on the same level with.  Their newest album released this year (look up the name if you wish) really leaped into a new genre of music for the band.  I have to admit I was not an admirer of the few singles released before the entire album.  Look, I'm a metal head at heart but still love a good emotionally powerful "anthem" if you will.  For whatever reason this album just did not resonate with me the way their previous albums have.  Having said that, let's get to the actual review of the show....

You can go ahead and just throw out the previous sentence.  I know there are songs, whole albums if you will, where the recorded material just doesn't translate the way it's probably meant to.  I can't explain that or even begin to try to lay blame at the proper feet but I know without a shadow of a doubt this was one of those albums for me.  Hearing and SEEING songs from this album being performed live was an entirely different experience.  Far and away.  Opening the set with "Up in the Air" immediately established the connection with the crowd and that bond only got stronger as the night progressed.  Followed by "kings and Queens" and then "This is War" the energy level was taken up to what I thought would be an adrenaline dump at some point afterwards in the set but I was completely wrong.  Even during the more sonically subdued track from the new album "Rescue Me", there was a palpable emotion in the air. Anything that produced light was taken in hand by the audience and lifted towards the sky in unison creating a scene that honestly had me tearing up like a child receiving a puppy for Christmas.  The cycle seemed to repeat itself with the angsty guitar driven track "The Kill" bringing everyone back to the energetic start of the set followed by "Walk on Water" and closing the show with the wonderfully poetic "Closer to the Edge" bringing around thirty or so fans onstage to enjoy the song with not only the band but the rest of the audience.  All in all it was an amazing night that I will not soon forget.  Experiencing a range of emotions in that way one would think would be quite tiring but it had such an opposite effect on me, I found it extremely hard to sleep for the next few days but you will hear zero complaints from me!  Looking forward to experiencing something like that again, the sooner the better.
