It's St. Patrick's week, and we would be foolish not to honor our local Irish punk rock band, Jasper Coal.
What started as a way to obtain some drinking money on St. Paddy's day in 2004, Jasper Coal has become a Birmingham institution. The band has been raising pints in local venues such as The Nick, Rogue Tavern, Bailey's (RIP), and, most recently, Saturn. Recently, Jasper Coal has found a home in the new Irish themed, Buck Mulligan's, where the spirit of the pub sing along merge with authentic fare and decor of the Emerald Isle.
The band released their latest album of traditional Irish tunes, Just the One..., in early 2015. They are currently working on a new record, one that will feature the band's first original recorded songs.
The band has traveled a long and lonely road as the only Irish-Punk group in town. Finding their place, and audience, has been hard fought. But after 13 years, the band, and their fans, will come together to celebrate this St. Patrick's day in the city's premiere venue, Iron City. The show will also serve as a bittersweet goodbye, as their long time guitarist, Ian Hoppe, will perform with the band for the last time. So, make sure you raise your pints with the band at Iron City's 4th Birthday Bash at with special guest, Taylor Hollingsworth . Show starts at 8:00pm and is all ages.
