Band of the Week: Jesse Payne

Published on Monday, February 20, 2017 by Tre Brannum

Jesse Payne is always evolving. From his first album, Beyond the Leaves,  to his latest release, Heirloom, Jesse has been searching for himself. And he has captured every chapter in song. Through his subsequent releases, he has found a way to speak about his journey in a way that is both accessible, and soothing to the listener.

When performing live music , Jesse has always been flanked by longtime band mate, Thomas Warren. But, just as important as the people sharing the stage, longtime collaborator Mike Creager of Capture Music, has helped shaped the sounds and moods of his music. The records grow with every album, and the musicians supporting him have also increased in number and sound. His band now consists of drummer, percussionist, sound scaping guitars, keys, an occasional accordion, with Warren taking over full time bass duties. The result is nothing less than spectacular.

The music has grown, the band has grown, Jesse has grown, his beard has grown, and the crowds have grown with them. Payne has enjoyed near sellout shows at venues such as Saturn, The Bottletree, and venues all around the Eastern US.

This February, Jesse embarks on his latest creation. The band has taken up residence at DISCO in the Woodlawn district. On February 20th and 27th, the band will open it's catalog, and share a few new tunes, in a way you've never heard. Mixing visual and aural media (and a few surprises he is keeping under wraps), Payne is inviting his audience to experience the music WITH the band. The show on the 20th will include guest appearance from Timber's Will Stewart, and live painting from Sarah Mason.

If you haven't picked up any of Jesse Payne's albums, you have been missing a true Birmingham gem. From the catchy tunes of Nesting, to the ever changing Heirloom, Payne's music will move even the most casual of music listener.
